Tribal TattooOne of the most popular dog breeds in the world is the German shepherd, sometimes known as the GSD for short. In the UK, they are called Alsatians, after the area in France where they originally were bred by German dog breeders. The first GSDs were whelped around 1882. For such a ubiquitous dog breed, it may be surprising to learn that it is less than 200 years old.

German Shepherd Dog Health Problems

German Shepherd Dog Health Problems

Because of indiscriminate breeding techniques they are prone to hip dysplasia. This may result in experiencing pain in later part of the dog's life. This will also invite arthritis related issues. It was found by The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals that 19.1% of the breed was affected by hip dysplasia. Though the study was small in nature, a study undertaken by University of Zurich in those dogs working for the police found that that 45% were affected by degenerative spinal stenosis. One of the major decline in police not preferring them anymore as a rightful 'police dog' is being attributed to this ailment.

Because they have big ears, they are prone to various ear infections. Like other dogs, they are also known to be prone to bloat. The breed being predisposed to it, Degenerative myelopathy, a neurological disease, is rampant among them. The incidence of Von Willebrand Disease, a common inherited bleeding disorder, is more than normal in them.

German Shepherd Temperament

German Shepherd Temperament

German Shepherds are highly intelligent and trainable. They are fast and willing learners with sharp minds. Good human to canine communication and a calm, firm owner will lead to a well-trained dog. They instinctively understand pack order and the humans should be sure that they establish themselves at the top of the pack early on. They should be socialized when they are young to prevent them from becoming timid around new people, animals, and situations.

They only bark when they feel it is necessary. Often used as police dogs, the German Shepherd has a very strong protective instinct, and are extremely loyal to their handler.

These are some of the most loyal dogs that exist. They will give their own lives for their human owners without a single hesitation. They are courageous and confident in the face of danger. A German Shepherd is an excellent watch or guard dog who is always alert, but should never show unwarranted aggression, but rather, they should be well-balanced and keen enough to understand when true danger is about.

The History of German Shepherd Dogs

The German Shepherd Dogs, Origin and HistoryThe German Shepherd Dog, Origin and History
The German Shepherd Dog (deutchschaferhund or GSD) is only a little over 100 years old, yet is arguably the most versatile dog breed. The GSD was bred to be the finest herding dog in Germany by selecting the best herding stock available, without regard for the way it looked. The final product, introduced at the first Verein show in 1899, was an immediate success.

The usefulness of the dog was demonstrated during WWI when German soldiers used the dog as messengers. So impressed were the soldiers from other countries, that when the war was over they took breeding stock home with them. When two German Shepherds became American film stars, “Braveheart” and “Rin Tin Tin,” the breed became popular with the public.

Germany remains the acknowledged leader in breeding a GSD true to type. Their rules for breeding and raising the GSD are enforced by Breed Wardens who are hired by the local breed clubs to ensure conformity to standards.
