Tribal TattooOne of the most popular dog breeds in the world is the German shepherd, sometimes known as the GSD for short. In the UK, they are called Alsatians, after the area in France where they originally were bred by German dog breeders. The first GSDs were whelped around 1882. For such a ubiquitous dog breed, it may be surprising to learn that it is less than 200 years old.

German Shepherd Temperament

German Shepherds are highly intelligent and trainable. They are fast and willing learners with sharp minds. Good human to canine communication and a calm, firm owner will lead to a well-trained dog. They instinctively understand pack order and the humans should be sure that they establish themselves at the top of the pack early on. They should be socialized when they are young to prevent them from becoming timid around new people, animals, and situations.
German Shepherd Temperament
They only bark when they feel it is necessary. Often used as police dogs, the German Shepherd has a very strong protective instinct, and are extremely loyal to their handler.

These are some of the most loyal dogs that exist. They will give their own lives for their human owners without a single hesitation. They are courageous and confident in the face of danger. A German Shepherd is an excellent watch or guard dog who is always alert, but should never show unwarranted aggression, but rather, they should be well-balanced and keen enough to understand when true danger is about.
